The Piatra Craiului mountains are located in the Eastern part of the Southern Carpathians, being famous for their steep limestone ridge and difficult routes. The geological structure of these mountains make them unique in Romania. The whole range is made of Mesozoic layers of limestone.

This mountains is very accessible for everyone, being situated just 30 kilometers away from Brasov, near the city of Zarnesti. However, they can be approached from all sides, even from Arges county.

Their highest point is ”La Om” peak, with an altitude of 2238 m (7342 ft).

Piatra Craiului is also a national park, rich in wild flora and fauna. When hiking in Piatra Craiului mountains, tourists can spot bears, lynx, wolves and the more famous chamois, jumping from cliff to cliff at higher altitudes.

Prapastiile Zarnestiului (Zarnesti Gorge) is probably the most popular tourist attraction in this mountain range. It is reachable by foot in less than one hour from the parking place. It consists of a 2 kilometer long canyon, carved here by the forces of nature during millions of years. Its massive cliffs raise high in the sky and provide excellent shelter for many interesteding species of animals and birds: chamois, the wall creeper, lesser spotted eagle and the golden eagle.
