Piatra Mare mountains (The Big Rock) is probably the most accessible mountain range near the city of Brasov. It’s mostly popular thanks to the Seven Ladders Canyon (Canionul Sapte Scari), situated at its foothills. Visible from almost every part of Brasov, the Piatra Mare massif has a maximum height of 1844 m (6050 ft) and impresses with beautiful 360 degrees panoramic views over the surrounding area.

Although they are not part of a nature reserve, Piatra Mare mountains have a rich diversity of flora and fauna. One of the biggest concentration of brown bears can be found here, thanks to the dense forests and relatively rugged terrain, inaccessible for people. On the other hand, the marked trails are easy to medium, even the beginners being able to reach the summit, if they have proper mountain gear. If you want to relax and have a basic meal, the beautifully placed Piatra Mare hut is situated at an altitude of 1628 m (5341 ft). It can be reached even by children and if you want to spend the night here, the prices are accessible. However, don’t expect separate rooms, as the entire hut is designed as an open space chalet where everybody can socialize and have fun.

For those wanting to explore Piatra Mare mountains on their own, the bus 17B is available, leaving from the main train station in Brasov. Get off the bus in Dambu Morii and follow the street up to the base of the mountain.
