Surrounded with myth, Ceahlau Mountains are compact and moderate in altitude, an absolute delight to explore.
You will meet with your guide in Brasov city and together you’ll drive to Ceahlau village, around 4h 20 min car drive. You will enjoy dinner and settle in for the night in one of the guesthouses located in the village.
Early in the morning, after breakfast, we will depart towards Ceahlau National Park.
The entry point into the Ceahlau National Park is located just above the Durau Monastery. Right from the base we can see the imposing view of the massif dominated by Toaca Peak, Panaghia rock and Piatra Ciobanului.
We will go on the hiking trail marked with a red stripe: Durau – Fantanele Hut – La Morminte – Cusma Dorobantului – Panaghia – Cabana Meteo – Toaca Peak – Dochia Hut, for about 4.5 hours
The route marked with a red stripe climbs quickly through a beech and spruce forest, crossing several meadows. The slope is gentle at first, but towards Fantanele Hut (1220 m) it becomes quite steep. At Cusma Dorobantului is a charming viewpoint from where you can see the Izvorul Muntelui reservoir and the Durau resort.
We can reach Toaca Peak (1900 m) on a 500-step staircase that leads us up to the peak, or we can also reach it via trail.
Toaca Peak is named after the semantron which monks used to strike on the peak to announce the time of prayer – semantron in Romanian means toaca. A small hermitage can still be found just west of Dochia Hut.
The panorama from the top is spectacular – to the south, the edge of Ocolaşului Mare (1907 m); then the Tarcaului mountains, with peaks that rarely exceed 1600 m; to the southwest the ridge of Hasmasului Mare (1793 m), to the west over the water of Bistricioara, Pietrele Rosii (1510 m).
After that we will descended from Toaca Peak, following the path (for about 200 m) among junipers on the trail that goes to Dochia Hut towards Lespezi Peak. Here we’ll settle in for the night and enjoy dinner.
Clouds or not, the views are stunning so our suggestion would be not to miss the sunrise from Dochia Hut. After breakfast, we will descend on the hiking trail that goes from Dochia Hut to Duruitoarea Waterfall, then Fantanele Hut, finishing in Durau, where we left the car.
From Dochia Hut to the impressive Duruitoarea Waterfall we will follow the red cross sign for about 2 – 2.5 hours, leaving behind the Toaca Peak, then another hour to Poiana Viezuri (we could say about this route that is a little bit difficult, not dangerous, but it requires attention; this route is closed during winters).
From Poiana Viezuri we will follow for 1 hour the yellow triangle that will take us to Fantanele Hut and from there down to Durau.
We will drive back to Brasov city on the same route we came, for about 4 hours and 20 min.
